as... as = adverb / preposition (1)
He came as quickly as he could.
This structure is used to measure and compare things that are of similar proportion. In this construction, the first as functions as an adverb modifying the following adjective or adverb.
The second as functions as a preposition when it relates to the following noun or pronoun. (It can also function as a conjunction when it relates to the following clause.)
Compare the following:
1) The meal was as good as the conversation: spicy and invigorating!
2) She spoke as slowly as she could.
3) Has everybody eaten as much as they want?
4) I hope you will agree that I am as imaginative a cook as my wife (is)!
Note from the above example that if there is an adjective and a noun after the first as, a / an must go between them. Note also that if we want to make a negative statement, we can use so…as instead of as…as:
1) He is not so / as intelligent as his sister is.
2) The cafeteria was not so / as crowded as it was earlier.
There are a large number of idiomatic expressions or fixed phrases which we use in informal English when we are making comparisons like this. Here are a few of them in context:
1) He went as white as a sheet when he saw the ghost.
2) My maths teacher is as deaf as a post and should have retired years ago.
3) She sat there as quiet as a mouse and wouldn’t say anything.
4) Electricity will be restored to our homes as soon as possible.
5) All the children were as good as gold when they came to visit me.
6) These stories are as old as the hills and have been passed down from generation to generation.
Remember that when we are measuring or comparing things that are of unequal proportion, we need to use the structure comparative + than:
1) Let me finish the report. I can type much faster than you (can).
2) He played the piece of music more slowly than I had ever heard it played before.

Review of the Passive Voice
1. Move the object of the active sentence to subject position in the passive sentence.
2. Change the verb to passive form (two parts).
3. Move the subject of the active sentence to object position preceded by the preposition by (optional).
In order to change the active verb to its corresponding passive form, we need to do two things:
1. Put the verb to be in the same tense as the verb in the active sentence. In this example the verb is in the simple past, so we use the past tense of be.
2. Use the past participle of the verb in the active sentence.
The passive verb, therefore, has two parts.
a) The verb to be indicates the tense, and the b) past participle indicates the action.

Relative Pronouns (1)
Estas palabras son: “who/whom”, “which” y “that”.
The girl who is sitting next to you.
La chica que estĆ” sentada al lado tuyo.
Nota: No puedo decir: “the girl which
A man whom I don't know.
Un hombre al cual no conozco.
Nota: No puedo decir: “I man which.
The book which you just read.
El libro que acabas de leer.
Nota: No puedo decir: “The book who....
A company which is going to merge.
Una empresa que va a a fusionarse.
Nota: No puedo decir: “A company who...
Consejo: Siempre que vayas a utilizar “who/which” piensa antes si te vas a referir a una persona o cosa y no te equivocarĆ”s.
Recuerda: who [ju] para personas y which [gĆ¼ich] para cosas.
¿CuĆ”l es la diferencia entre “who” y “whom”?
Whom es mƔs formal que who, lo cual quiere decir que cuando queramos hablar de forma mƔs elegante utilizaremos "whom" en vez de "who".
¿QuĆ© funciones hacen los “relatives pronouns”
who/whom, which, that?
Dos funciones que ya hemos mencionado, pero que repetiremos para que las memorices.
1) Identifican a una persona o cosa. Este tipo de oraciones se llaman “identifying relative clauses”
Ejemplo 1:
He is the person whom I spoke about.
Ćl es la persona de la que hablĆ©.
Ejemplo 2:
The bag which you gave me.
Ejemplo 1:
You already know Mr. Smith, who is one of my best friends.
“TĆŗ ya conoces al Sr. Smith que es uno de mis mejores amigos.”
Nota: En la primera parte de la oraciĆ³n ya hemos identificado a la persona “es el Sr. Smith al cual ya conoces”; luego aƱadimos mĆ”s informaciĆ³n.
Ejemplo 2:
Thirty years ago my uncle built this house, which is now worth 4.000.000 euros.
Ejemplo: My friend, who you don't know, is coming today. Mi amigo, a quien no conoces, viene hoy.

Practicing III
Rewrite the following paragraph in the active voice, on the back of this page, or in your notebook.
Last summer our house was painted by me. The job took about two weeks. First, the
exterior was washed using warm water and a mild detergent. Then all the chinks and pores in the walls were sealed with putty.
After the putty had had a chance to dry, the exterior could be painted.
A latex paint was used because it is easy to apply and cleans up with water. A whole
week was needed to finish this part of the job. I was very careful to apply the paint evenly
because I did not want to have to apply two coats. A color was used that was very close to the
original color. Our house is a two-story house, which meant that a tall ladder was needed to do
the second story. The paint can had to be balanced on the top rung of the ladder while I worked.
When the job was finished, a great deal of satisfaction was felt by me. I had to pat myself on the
back. Even my dad said that a good job was done.
